    salty sea

if there’s one thing that the salton sea taught me is that the apocalypse will stink like a mother.

rotting fish smell, stepping on beaches covered in fish skeletons, and flies everywhere. giant monster swarms of flies.

on the bright side, i got to kick a door in. i always wanted to do that.

    monophonia

so my boss’ band just got their mastered CD back. the mastered CD was mono. they emailed the mixing guy saying “hey, i think you gave us the wrong version”, here’s the reply, copy pasted:

“No. It’s mixed mono. All tracked straight up. It comes out both speakers. Most of the records I record are this way. Mono just means we did not pan any instruments in the stereo L-R field. I prefer it because it’s always balanced and never any phase issues to deal with, which can get tricky.”

so much awesome in such a short bit of text. “it comes out both speakers” and “no phase issues, which can be tricky” are both absotively fantastic

there’s a rabbit on the shore

in reaper’s song “she’s a devil and a whore”, i cannot hear him say that at all. all i hear is “sheezadavi lakahore”.

here, i made you a video of just that looped, try it:

    sheezadavi lakahore

EDIT: best interpretation so far is “she’s a tiny little horse”

    bands

so currently we rehearse in this shared studio-by-the-hour place. it comes out to about $36 a week, which is way better than renting a garage or shack

so we were arriving at the band practice space yesterday (saturday), and noticed it was totally empty. we usually do sundays with 3 or 4 other bands, or weekdays which are totally packed. we were literally the only ones there that day. after laughing about it for a little bit, realized that it was cause everyone else had something better to do on a Saturday night, either with friends or family. eh.

also, odds are I’ll give up on twitter for microblogging and go back to this. I’ll use twitter for social stuff but that’s probably it

    twittercocks

somewhere outside of london there exists an underground research facility for generating vat-grown, skinny, blond, shaggy-haired british bioautomatons. as rock bands age and some of their members retire, an attendant presses a button and a new clone is dropped from his holding tank, given an instrument, and sent off on tour, only to be recycled after the last gig

at least that’s the conclusion i drew after seeing the bassist and drummer for the buzzcocks. great show overall.

    cheers bordertown

against all odds that was a great show. first time in my life i appreciated getting a 4×12″ speaker cab and not a tiny amp cause the PA wasn’t quite working and all the bands used their actual amps to play the room. we still played a good set despite drums falling apart, no soundcheck, and us having about 2′ total to stand it. later got called out by name jared from chemlab who apparently dug the hell out of our set and talked about us from onstage

and woke up to easily one of the best txt messages i ever got

and a hangover. but i’m ok with that.

    downrising

i’ll be spinning on friday of Love Potion in a Bottle, on the 28th. industrial set. it’s gothic western themed, but other than the obligatory Urban Struggle (aka “i want to be a cowboy”) and Beers Steers and Queers, i’m not bringing anything pre-2005

well, except my brand cut up of Flesh Field’s Uprising. i took out the horrid choruses and added drums to where the girl sings. if you want the edit for some reason, grab it here.

hey, if anyone still has my edit of tragic hero, let me know. i’d like to spin that again and i don’t want to remake it from scratch.

    the other DK

i’d love to close a shaolin show with a ‘cover’ of chickenshit conformist. this song for the unfamiliar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDuZVBf9U8Q

    with slight lyric twists

    industrial’s not dead
    it just deserves to die
    it become another stale cartoon
    a close-minded, self-centered social club
ideas don’t matter, it’s who you know
    if the music’s gotten boring
    it’s because of the people
who want everyone to sound the same
    who drive bright people out
    of our so-called scene
til all that’s left is just a meaningless fad

    who played last night?
    “i don’t know, i forgot.
but getting drunk was a lot of fun.”

    so eager to please
    peer pressure decrees
    make the same old mistakes
    again and again,
    chickenshit conformist like your parents

what’s ripped us apart even more than drugs
are the thieves and the goddamn liars
flipping people off when they share their stuff
when someone falls are there any friends?

harder core than thou for a year or two
then it’s time to get a real job

that farty old rock and roll attitude’s back
“it’s competition, man, we wanna break big.”
who needs friends when the money’s good
that’s right, the ’80s are back.

    EBM’s like a bad laxative
it just don’t move me, ya know?
the music’s OK when there’s more ideas than samples
do we rally need the attitude too?

    shedding thin skin too quickly
as a fan it disappoints me
    same old stupid sexist lyrics
or is Hellraiser all you can think of?

    the more things change
the more they stay the same
    we can’t grow
    when we won’t criticize ourselves
as the clock ticks we dig the same hole
    music scenes ain’t real life
they won’t get rid of the bomb
    won’t eliminate rape
    or bring down the banks
    any kind of real change
    takes more time and work
than torrenting more shit to pass time with
