    march second second march

new preteen is up: sherman’s second march

    some thoughts:

    • came out more religious than we thought. that’s in a big way cause the popularization of the ‘weird’ that we like to look into. we had to dig a bit deeper than before, and the result was going into older sources. some stuff ages a bit worse, and there’s only so much communism we can put into a CD. religion is more timeless
    • the verses on Black Block are sampled from an a capella by Utah Phillips. google him
    • the beats date from between 2007 to 2011. the CD was assembled from separate piles of beats and samples, and into an album, mostly in the last week of February 2011
    • boyfriend is a cover
    • electrohead is not a cover
    • the sample on unapologia is real and not taken out of context. we actually considered recutting it to try and get him to make more sense, since he likes to change what his pronouns refer to mid-sentence, but figured that it’d be best left alone
    • this is our longest CD ever and savannah is our longest song ever
    • “message from our sponsor” is our second shortest album song ever and third shortest overall. “uncanny valley (radio edit)” is 4 seconds shorter, “uncanny valley (extended)” is 2 seconds shorter
    • “uncanny valley (radio edit)” is actually too short to go onto a CD
    • savannah is too long to fit on any CD format currently in use. it could fit on a DVD-A though
    • “flaming sanken seven stamp my tote” was the most renamed song on the album. most were different onomatopoeias for that first line
    • “message from our sponsor” made the cut to be on the CD by about 2 hours
    • “a prayer for the nation of africa” is not a complicated audio hack. the speaker really seemed to not have been clear on the difference between a continent and a country
    • despite being in almost every live show, this is the first time that Steve contributed audio to an album. he wrote some of the backing audio in “savannah” and “hate and rockets”
    • i think the only sampled statement in the history of the band that i genuinely can say “i agree with this entirely” is the opening alan moore line in “black block”: “Anarchy is, and always has been, a romance.”

    rumors of my death, etc

not dead. just finally wrapping up recovering from the summer

new shaolin will be an EP. it will be slower, more fed-back, and contain 4 new tracks and 2 old tracks. the old tracks will be “12 Hardcore” and “Sniper at the Edge of the World”.

current monday morning plans: deal with 4200+ spam comments on a blog at work and figure out why a machine rebooted 13 times last night.

    inspiration fragments

in case it’s not obvious, the world of “The End of the World” crosses over with the world of preteen pornstar’s “Little Kid Stories”. the angels, beasts, and humans are the same. the ship in shaolin’s “Components” is the same ship in preteen’s “The Ark”. “Chase Fuck Kill” is the thought process by the finished state of a creature that starts it’s transformation in “The Bat”, and same sort of creature that is killed in “The Shotgun”.

anyways, this was the birth of a few of the song titles:

components – it started with the verse melody, played on bells. the melody was called ‘shift on contact’. it then became a random song idea called ‘v components’ (mp3)that finally became ‘components’ after more rewriting. the first line, “pieces of you”, came about from IMing elisa and saying “IM me back one word”, and her replying “pieces”.

death poem – a book title i saw

black heart event – in harvest moon, a black heart event is when a character begins a romance with you. the heart slowly turns red i guess. also, bush jr used the phrase “children had their hearts turned black” in reference to a school shooting

    dukes of biohazards – pun

    cattlecull – pun

nothing is right – half of a 2 song set, the other being “nothing is wrong”, that will be on “what came after”

    slavation – pun

slivers of fakes – half of a 2 song set, the other being “flakes of silver”. “flakes of silver” itself came about cause of one of luiza’s early internet usernames: silverchip.

    in the visible – pun

    salty sea

if there’s one thing that the salton sea taught me is that the apocalypse will stink like a mother.

rotting fish smell, stepping on beaches covered in fish skeletons, and flies everywhere. giant monster swarms of flies.

on the bright side, i got to kick a door in. i always wanted to do that.

    bands

so currently we rehearse in this shared studio-by-the-hour place. it comes out to about $36 a week, which is way better than renting a garage or shack

so we were arriving at the band practice space yesterday (saturday), and noticed it was totally empty. we usually do sundays with 3 or 4 other bands, or weekdays which are totally packed. we were literally the only ones there that day. after laughing about it for a little bit, realized that it was cause everyone else had something better to do on a Saturday night, either with friends or family. eh.

also, odds are I’ll give up on twitter for microblogging and go back to this. I’ll use twitter for social stuff but that’s probably it

    cheers bordertown

against all odds that was a great show. first time in my life i appreciated getting a 4×12″ speaker cab and not a tiny amp cause the PA wasn’t quite working and all the bands used their actual amps to play the room. we still played a good set despite drums falling apart, no soundcheck, and us having about 2′ total to stand it. later got called out by name jared from chemlab who apparently dug the hell out of our set and talked about us from onstage

and woke up to easily one of the best txt messages i ever got

and a hangover. but i’m ok with that.

    downrising

i’ll be spinning on friday of Love Potion in a Bottle, on the 28th. industrial set. it’s gothic western themed, but other than the obligatory Urban Struggle (aka “i want to be a cowboy”) and Beers Steers and Queers, i’m not bringing anything pre-2005

well, except my brand cut up of Flesh Field’s Uprising. i took out the horrid choruses and added drums to where the girl sings. if you want the edit for some reason, grab it here.

hey, if anyone still has my edit of tragic hero, let me know. i’d like to spin that again and i don’t want to remake it from scratch.
